This page provides some example code for analysing trace fossil distributions cf. Mitchell et al. 2022:  A new approach for investigating spatial relationships of ichnofossils: a case study of Ediacaran–Cambrian animal traces

To do some good trace fossil spatial analyses you will need:
  1.  A good fossil surface, where you can be reasonably sure the traces are contemporary.
  2. A vector map of the surface, using photographs, laser scans or photogrammetry using Inkscape - an example is here
  3. Co-ordinates of the mapped out fossils.  For trails/trackways the R code by Katie Delahooke is her github and for body-fossils and/or vertical burrows is on Emily Mitchell's github.
  4. Analyses are performed in R using the package spatstat. Code to reproduce the analyses done in Mitchell et al. 2022 can be downloaded here.
